There isn’t just one reason people step into this kind of work. But when you listen closely, a pattern starts to form.
It usually doesn’t begin with a plan. It begins with a moment.
For some, it’s as simple as a conversation—a friend of a friend makes an introduction, a meeting happens, and a story gets shared. That’s how one team member first connected with the Home of Record Project.
At the time, the organization was just getting started. No long track record. No established systems. Just a mission—and a need.
There wasn’t a résumé requirement. Just a willingness to step in and help.
And that was enough.
“I knew I wanted to get into the veteran nonprofit space…
After meeting Whitney and learning more, I was excited for the opportunity to be part of such a great cause.”
What kept them there wasn’t just the mission. It was the people.
“The HRP team is incredible to work with… and they’re all extremely passionate about the work we do.”
For others, it goes deeper than opportunity. It’s personal. It’s about perspective. It’s about knowing you were given a second chance—and realizing not everyone was.
That’s what led to the founding of the organization.

“Many veterans didn’t get a second chance that I did…
I owe it to them to do something better with my borrowed time.”
That kind of clarity doesn’t fade. It turns into responsibility. Not something you talk about. Something you build around.
And sometimes, it starts with respect. Watching someone else carry a vision.
Seeing the level of work, sacrifice, and consistency it takes to actually move something forward.
“I admired his vision and work ethic and sacrifice.”
That’s what draws people in. Not hype. Not visibility. But the kind of commitment that’s hard to ignore.
The Thread That Connects It All
Different starting points. Same direction. People step into this work because something in them won’t let them look away. And once they’re in, they stay—because they see what’s actually at stake.
The Home of Record Project exists to create real pathways forward for veterans who need stability, structure, and a place to rebuild.
Not as an idea. As a process. As daily work. As something that has to get done.
Why We’re Sharing These Stories
At Dumpstr Xpress, we’re starting a series of posts around this work because we believe the health of a community shows up in how it cares for its people. Especially those who’ve already given more than most. If more people understood what’s actually happening on the ground, more people would step in.
That’s the goal.
