At Dumpstr Xpress, we believe in showing up for the people who show up for our country.
That’s why we’re incredibly honored to be part of an ongoing smart home project in Scottsdale, AZ, led by the Gary Sinise Foundation through its R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) program. This effort is being made for U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Brad Ivanchan, a Purple Heart recipient whose story of courage, loss, and recovery reminds us all what real sacrifice looks like.
Who Is Brad Ivanchan?
Born with a competitive spirit and a deep respect for service, Brad joined the U.S. Marines on his 19th birthday, inspired by his grandfather and fellow Americans already serving overseas. After rising through the ranks and taking leadership in active combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, Brad was critically injured during a patrol in Helmand Province in 2012 when he stepped on a pressure-plate IED. The blast resulted in the loss of his right leg, severe injuries to his left leg and arm, and a second explosion that caused additional casualties — including the death of one of his fellow Marines.
After multiple surgeries, months of excruciating recovery, and incredible personal determination, Brad not only learned to walk again using prosthetics, but went on to summit Mt. Aconcagua — becoming the first double amputee in history to do so.
The R.I.S.E. Program: Restoring Independence
Today, Brad continues to live with the daily challenges of his injuries. His current home is small, difficult to navigate in a wheelchair, and lacks safe access in and out of the building — all things that will be addressed in this upcoming specially adapted smart home, custom designed by the Gary Sinise Foundation.
The R.I.S.E. program builds homes that allow veterans like Brad to live independently, safely, and with dignity. Everything from widened doorways to voice-activated smart tech is built around accessibility, mobility, and long-term care.
